The Dominique is the oldest American chicken breed and was
once the most popular nationwide.  However, its numbers
began to dwindle after the
Industrial Revolution.  The breed is currently on the ALBC
watch list.

Their hardy, dual-purpose nature is what attracted us to their
usefulness on a small farm.  They are layers of brown eggs,
and are attractive birds with their black and white barred
plumage and rose combs.

The background is a drawing of a Dominique cock and hen that was often
featured in Dominique advertisements in the 1860's.
