| The easiest way for many homesteaders and large scale farmers alike to start with chickens is to order very young chicks from a hatchery. This gives you access to a wide range of breeds that may be unavailable in your area. You can now order many chicks sexed, which means that you can select the number of males (cockerels) and females (pullets) that you need. Keep in mind, however, that the majority of hatcheries insist upon shipping a minimum number of 25 chicks per order. That is a precaution taken to avoid the risk of death due to cold or rough handling during transit. There are a few hatcheries, however, that have developed a system of shipping chicks without requiring a minimum order. Our Red Stars came from a hatchery that had a 15 minimum chick order policy. That hatchery has since gone out of business. We acquired our Dominiques from McMurray Hatchery. View the following links to find which would be most suitable for you. |
